During the end of the semester crunch time, I was woefully un-creative. I felt like my brain had to be fully occupied with thesis-y and exam-y things, and I felt guilty if I took time to draw or sew etc.
But! I did manage to make one (well, two) small things. The relaxation and ... rejuvenation (for lack of a better term) that I got out of it, makes me think I would have been far smarter to have made the time to do some creative projects too.
I made some flower bobby pins to wear in my hair during Spring and Summertime.
This is a few layers of pink floral cotton voile with an amber colored bead in the center. I cut a few "flower" shapes and arranged them so that they didn't overlap perfectly. Then I pinched them in the center on one side, and sewed a few stitches so that it "poofed" up a bit on the other side and looked more flower-like. Attach a bead, and stick it on a bobby pin, and voila! Hair whimsy.
High on the success of the pink number, I searched around me for other things to put in my hair.
I found this sad little fabric flower (not made by me... I believe it was attached to a gift bag once upon a time)
This time the sewing was limited to attaching a green bead in the center and adhering the whole shebang to a bobby pin.
Clearly making these flower pins was not an elaborate undertaking, but relaxing with them for a few hours in front of an episode of Masterpiece Theater was definitely a welcome respite at the end of April. Must make a mental note to keep doing creative things for sanity's sake for when I have to do prelims. (If you do not know what these are, congratulations on your decision to avoid graduate school)
(Why yes, I am the kind of person who keeps her accessories on display on an old gift tag. I am also the kind of person who doesn't dust.)
