This weekend as we were running errands, Sean and I noticed that a local church had opened their thrift shop for the year. We decided to pop in and see if there were any treasures to be found. It's a very small store, but it's run by lovely people and seems to be stocked mostly with items from elderly members of the church. The prices were quite reasonable, and even though we passed up some cool items (a cute tea pot! an old fashioned suitcase with lots of pockets!), I still brought home some little things.
A blue and white Chinese teacup, three crocheted doilies, a vintage book with a pretty cover to add my collection (more in an upcoming post) and sparkly floral clip-on earrings which will probably be reinvented as shoe clips.
The teacup is particularly beautiful when the light is shining through it:
The china is thinner in certain areas so that the light shines through it and creates a speckled effect.
The book, "Marcia Schuyler" by Grace Livingston Hill Lutz I got for the measly sum of 75 cents. I picked it up because the cover was striking, but I knew I had to get it when I read the opening paragraph:
"The sun was already up and the grass blades were twinkling with sparkles of dew, as Marcia stepped from the kitchen door.
She wore a chocolate calico with little sprigs of red and white scattered over it, her hair was in smooth brown braids down her back, and there was a flush on her round cheeks that might have been but the reflection of the rosy light in the East. Her face was as untroubled as the summer morning, in its freshness, and her eyes as dreamy as the soft clouds that hovered upon the horizon uncertain where they were to be sent for the day."
I love that almost naive overdose of detail in the opening lines!
Along the line of thrifted finds, I will also share that I quickly stopped by hospital thrift shop about five minutes from home. It's actually quite expensive, but I did get two granny hankies for a dollar altogether.
I am a rather sneezy girl, so these will definitely come in handy and the bright florals will cheer up my seasonal allergies. I like handkerchiefs because they are environmentally friendly but also because they remind me of the great Luciano Pavarotti.
If only I could carry a handkerchief with such aplomb!
